“Don’t ever bench him again”, Chelsea fans hail super sub for good performance against Crystal Palace

Chelsea secured a last-minute away victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon – and some Blues fans on Twitter hailed their substitute Marcos Alonso for his cameo performance from the bench.

The Blues beat rivals Palace 1-0 today in the Premier League at Selhurst Park.

Hakim Ziyech, who had earlier seen a goal ruled out for offside, volleyed in an 89th minute winner. It was second-half substitute Alonso that played a pivotal role in the winning strike, though.

Alonso replaced Malang Sarr in the 74th minute in the left-back position, adding an extra attacking threat in the wide area. His pin-point cross found goalscorer Ziyech to net emphatically in the closing stages.

It was a league match where the Blues were often left frustrated when it came to their work in the final third, so they needed a piece of magic off the bench.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media were left praising Alonso for his vital role.

The 31-year-old full-back is a much more natural attacking threat than teammate Sarr, who’s a centre-back by trade.

Alonso’s often criticised by plenty for his defensive attributes, especially in a back four, but he’s come up with so many big moments during a Stamford Bridge career that started back in 2016.

The Spaniard’s recently suggested he’s happy and would like to extend his stay in West London. His current Blues deal runs until 2023.

Here are some Chelsea fans discussing Alonso:
